Safeguarding

The safety and well being of children here at Bell Lane is our first priority. Children cannot learn unless they are happy and safe. We adhere to stringent Safeguarding procedures to protect the welfare of all our children.

Our commitment

The school is committed to providing an environment where children can play, learn, develop and achieve, and where they are safeguarded and are enabled to tell or communicate if they are being harmed in some way. We are committed to ensuring that all staff are sensitive to issues of race, culture, gender and diversity but these issues should never be a barrier to sharing and reporting concerns about children.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We expect all staff, volunteers and visitors to share this commitment.

Operation Encompass

Bell Lane with the support of the Governing Body, is taking in Operation Encompass an innovative project the Metropolitan Police are running in partnership with local schools across Barnet. The national project aims to safeguard and support children who are affected by domestic incidents.

If you would like to find out what is considered to be a domestic incident please take a look at the guidance from the Met Police on their website:

What is Operation Encompass?

Operation Encompass is the implementation of key partnerships working between the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) , the local authority (LA) and designated safeguarding leads (DLS) in the school.

Working together to safeguard children, the MPS will notify specially briefed DSL’s within schools about any domestic abuse incident where the child or young person has been present to allow the school to take appropriate steps to support their pupil during what could be an emotionally difficult day. Encompass DSL’s within the schools are then able to accommodate the school day to lessen the impact and support the child if they need it. In its simplest form, they are given some leeway, comfort and support. This can make a huge difference to children and young people in allowing them to have a safe space.

Operation Encompass is notification system whereby the school will be informed buy the police that a child (under 18) has been exposed to, or involved in, any domestic incident as a result of the police attending. This will ordinarily be done by the start of the next day.

This information is given in the strict confidence to a specially trained member of school staff. known as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). In Bell Lane this is Miss Harsha Patel (Head teacher). They will use the information that has been shared, in confidence, enable support to be given, dependent on the needs and wishes of the child.

The school may also be able to make additional provision or adjustments to assist the child and their family.

We are keen to offer the best support possible to all our pupils and we believe this will be extremely beneficial for all those involved.
